Settings (email, etc)
  1. What is my username?

If you signed up online your username is whatever you selected during sign-up. If you signed up by post it is your first initial followed by a period (.) followed by your surname; e.g. j.doe. This will also be your username if you signed up by phone unless you specified a different one.

Your username is provided on the initial welcome letter you receive after signing up. If you lose/forget/misplace it please contact us.

  2. Do I get an email address?

Yes! On setup of your account an email address is also setup with your username: username@beyondsl.net. Your initial password is the same as your account password. This information is provided in the initial welcome letter you receive after signing up. Please contact us if you lose/forget/misplace any of this information.

  3. How do I access my email by the web?

We have 3 different webmail clients that you can use to do your email in a web browser. In the same way that you can browse the web with Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari you can check your email via our website in either Horde, SquirrelMail or RoundCube.

    Please visit: www.beyondsl.net/webmail.

  4. How do I check my email via POP3?

You will need to configure your email client with the correct settings:

    Incoming POP3 Mailserver: mail.beyondsl.net
    Outgoing SMTP Mailserver: mail.beyondsl.net

Please note that the outgoing mailserver requires authentication to send emails.

For guides on setting up common email clients, please visit our mail control panel and click on "Configure Mail Client".

  5. How do I setup my Wireless Router?

The instructions for setting up the wireless router we supply are in the box. If you have trouble with this please visit My Account and contact us. We do not provide support for wireless routers not supplied by us. The most important things to note are:

    • The satmodem uses an IP address of 192.168.1.1 by default and it can not be changed
    • Your wi-fi router must, therefore, be set to have a different one: say 192.168.2.1
    • For instructions, please see the manual which came with your wifi router or contact the manufacturer for support
    • Wireless is DISABLED by default on most Routers. Please connect via a wired connection to setup wireless by following the instructions issued by the manufacturer.
    • The WAN interface should be set to obtain an IP address automatically from the Astra2Connect modem.
    • The LAN interface has an IP address range that is similar to 192.168.x.x depending on its make. Your PC should obtain an IP address automatically.
    • Remember to secure your wireless by Setting up a passphrase or password. If you leave it open you risk other people abusing your connection, stealing your data and stopping your service from working properly.

For more details on network configuration, pelase also see the manual that came with your satmodem (usually on the CD) or you can download one from the FAQ Download section.

  6. Belkin WiFi Router Configuration

If you have a Belkin Wireless Router and the above guidance is not detailed enough, you should contact their customer support for configuration or technical support.

Their support website is here. They have a list of phone numbers for different countries and their UK helpline is 0845 607 7787 (local call rates apply).

  7. What is an IP Address? What is mine?

The IP address is a unique number that identifies each sender or receiver of information that is sent across the Internet. When a web page is requested or e-mail is sent, the user's IP address is included in the message and this is sent to the IP address of the server at the far end.

The easiest way to show your current IP address is by visiting this web site: http://whatismyipaddress.com/
If you are familiar with the PC command ipconfig you can also display your IP address using that, as long as your PC is connected directly to the satellite modem and not via a router.

  8. Is my IP address Dynamic or Static?

Most people never know what their IP address is and many ISPs are likely to issue a different one each time you connect. With us, your IP address seldom changes and from this point onwards it likely to remain the same for extended periods of time. It is not Dynamic but it is not completely fixed. In between the (rare) changes, you can treat it as a Static IP address. Having an address that does not often change (typically referred to as a static address) can be useful if you connect to your system remotely and sometimes if a Virtual Private Network (VPN) is being used.
